The story of Maisie's restaurant - Gympie Terrace - Noosaville

Picture of Maisie

Maisie's was built in 1920 by Pattermore and Cash for Jiddy Massound. The Massound family ran it as a café- the first in the district. Jiddy's daughter, Maisie worked for her parents in the café as a chef/cook and waited on the tables at "The Favourite" as the café was then known.

Jiddy Massound continued to run the café through the depression and World War 2, when it became a favorite eating place for the troops stationed in the area ,especially the 2/14 battalion. It was the first drive-in takeaway café, as the troops would drive the amphibious army ducks out of the river and up to the café to collect their food, which was cooked on a small wood stove. Throughout this period the Massounds would cook from six to eight cases of fish a day, each case weighing 60lb and because the stove was fuelled by wood the café would fill up with smoke so the locals started calling it "Smokey Joe's"

War rationing didn't really affect the café's operation, because if they ran out of something the troops would get it for Jiddy. In return the Massound family would entertain troops by moving the pianola out onto Gympie Terrace itself. Maisie recalls that right throughout this time not so much of a teaspoon went missing and that ..."if people had money they would pay for their meals- if they didn't the food was free". How times have changed!

The current leasees of the original café, Ziggy and Julie Fiegl have honored their landlady by naming the restaurant after Maisie, who used to regularly dine here and have oysters for entree, main and dessert.

Sadly, .Maisie passed away on 21st of May 2005. She is missed greatly by those who knew her.
